The U.S. surgeon general released an advisory Friday stating alcohol is the third-leading cause of preventable cancer. Vivek Murthy’s quest for warning labels on alcoholic beverages seems likely to fall on deaf ears in the incoming Trump Administration and Republican-led Congress. For some in the commonwealth, it’s a shot across the bow at what the Kentucky Distillers Association refers to as a $9 billion dollar industry. KDA President Eric Gregory did not respond to a request for comment Friday. The surgeon general’s advisory showed alcohol use contributes to nearly 100,000 cancer cases and about 20,000 cancer deaths annually. ** WEKU is working hard to be a leading source for public service, and fact-based journalism.
