ALBION, Ind. (WANE) -- After 45 years of business Albion Village Foods is closing its doors leaving the town of Albion without a grocery store.
In a Facebook post on December 31, the store initially announced that all remaining inventory would be 25% off and the store would remain open until inventory was gone. Another post on Saturday the store posted that all remaining items would be 50% off while supplies last.
The Saturdays post Albion Village Food also thanked all for shopping with them for the last 45 years.
Owner Jim Zumbrun and co-owner Richard Baughman opened the grocery store doors in 1979 later passing the store on to sons Jeff and Brian Zumbrun.
The exact details as to why the grocery store is closing are unknown. The grocery store notified the public and its workers on Dec. 30 that they would be shutting down.
Steven Troves, who has worked in the Deli department at Albion Village Foods said he was not sure what he was going to do next, as the store was all he's known.
"It's a big step, this store is a huge part of the community," Troves said. "There's going to be a huge impact and ripple effect with the store closing."
Johnny Sieber said he's most concerned for the older folks and the lack of convenience of having a store right in town to get groceries from.
"My uncle is 97, he gets all his groceries here, and now we will probably have to drive him over to Kendallville for his groceries," Sieber said.
With the shutdown of Albion Village Foods, Albion can now be classified as a food desert. A food desert is defined as, "a geographic areas where residents’ access to affordable, healthy food options (especially fresh fruits and vegetables) is restricted or nonexistent due to the absence of grocery stores within convenient traveling distance," according to the Food Empowerment Project.
The two closest grocery store locations are the Kroger found in Ligonier and Kendallville, both being over 10 miles away from downtown Albion and a nearly 20-minute drive away.
