Wet wintry Sunday, cold air here to stay
Jan 04, 2025
The first weekend of 2025 is off to a sunny and cold start; while the cold air sticks around, the sunshine will be fleeting as we head into Sunday. With lows in the 20s and teens ahead of a storm system approaching from the west, snow-lovers will be watching the incoming moisture carefully. Unfortunately for them, this system will not bring a winter wonderland to the Piedmont or Foothills. While a quick burst of snow or sleet is possible along the I-40 corridor late Sunday morning into the early afternoon, any precipitation will quickly transition to a cold rain later in the day. The High Country will likely see mainly snow in the morning before transitioning to a wet wintry mix or even all rain by the afternoon and evening. Highs will end up in the mid-to-lower 40s in the Piedmont and Foothills while the mountains hang in the mid-30s.
A cold front will race into the Carolinas by Monday afternoon, bringing another round of rain into our area to start the first full week of the year. While severe weather isn’t in the forecast, we’ll want to watch for a line of gusty showers arriving around sunrise Monday morning. Some short-range models are pointing toward a weak cluster of showers, both wet and wintry, in the Piedmont Monday evening, but most of the moisture will end up north of I-40. Northwesterly flow will lead to another round of snow in the High Country through early Tuesday morning. While highs may approach 50º in the Queen City and southward on Monday, the Metro will likely end up stuck in the 40s for the remainder of the week ahead. A strong area of high pressure will keep our area dry and sunny ahead of the next storm system that arrives by the following weekend.
