SCOUTING RIDER: The Broncs haven’t played since a Dec. 22 loss at N.C. State — their seventh in a row — to close out non-conference play. They are already in an 0-2 hole in the MAAC after dropping two league games in December that were both within one-possession in the final minute. There has to be a sense of urgency on Sunday to save a season that has quickly gone sideways. Start on the defensive end where there has to be a better attention to detail, particularly on getting out to shooters. Opponents are making 35.5% from beyond the arc and averaging nearly nine made 3s per game (8.7). Defensive breakdowns get exacerbated when you aren’t making shots. Rider’s shooting struggles have been well documented (28.2% from 3; 65.9% from the free throw line), but perhaps that changes against an opponent that also struggles defensively. The Broncs have an advantage inside with 6-9, 255-pound Tariq Ingraham (9.9 points, 6.3 rebounds) — the Jaspers don’t have anybody who can play him one on one — and should look to create second-chance opportunities by getting on the offensive glass.
SCOUTING MANHATTAN: The Jaspers are going to be kicking themselves after coughing up a six-point lead with less than a minute remaining in regulation before falling in double overtime to Siena. Manhattan has a strong starting five — four of the five players average in double figures — and are led by star freshman Will Sydnor (15.7 points, 6.8 rebounds). Second-leading scorer and sixth man Devin Dinkins (11.9 points) had 26 against Siena, while Shaquil Bender (11.0 points), Wesley Robinson (10.6 points) and Jaden Winston (10.3 points, 59 assists) are also impact players. The Jaspers’ weakness is on the defensive end. They allow 78.7 points per game while opponents shoot 44.6% overall and 36.2% from beyond the arc. (Their last two games have gone to overtime).
