Strong winds and increased fire threat to start the weekend
Jan 04, 2025
NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – A storm system passing over to our north will bring high winds through the afternoon to New Mexico. Westerly winds will gust anywhere from 35 to 55 mph. Blowing dust and high fire danger is possible for most of the state. Even warmer temperatures will move in with the winds as well, with a record-high temperature possible in Albuquerque. This evening, a cold front will move in from the northwest, beginning a cooling trend that will continue through next week. Breezy, lighter winds and cooler temperatures will be in place for Sunday. Some light snow will also be possible early Sunday morning in far northeastern New Mexico.

Next week’s weather gets a lot more interesting. Monday and Tuesday will be a quiet, but cooler day across New Mexico. A winter storm will begin moving in by late Tuesday afternoon, moving from north to south across the state. A gusty east canyon wind will develop in the Albuquerque Metro Tuesday evening as well. Temperatures get even colder on Wednesday as snow levels drop to valley floors, with almost all of New Mexico seeing high temperatures in the 30s. Light snow is also expected to fall all the way down into southern New Mexico and the Mexican border on Wednesday morning. Snowfall totals from this first round will be light to moderate, with the heaviest totals in the northern mountains and east-central New Mexico where 1″ to 4″ will be possible.
Uncertainty lies with this storm system Wednesday evening through Friday morning. Right now, it looks like more snow is likely across the southern half of the state, especially on Thursday, where a dusting to a couple of inches of snow will be likely south of I-40. Travel impacts don’t look to be widespread, but a few icy spots will be possible across New Mexico, with the slickest travel across the higher elevations. This storm will move out by Friday night, but cooler temperatures stick around.
