Louisa County declares local state of emergency ahead of winter storm

LOUISA COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- The Louisa County Board of Supervisors declared a local state of emergency on Saturday ahead of the winter storm forecasted to hit Virginia on Sunday evening.
On Saturday, Jan. 4, Louisa County announced that it had declared a local state of emergency in preparation for the winter storm forecasted to hit Virginia on the evening of Sunday, Jan. 5.
The announcement comes just after Gov. Glenn Youngkin declared a state of emergency across Virginia on Friday, Jan. 3.
In the announcement, Louisa County officials emphasized the Virginia Department of Transportation's message urging drivers to prepare and adjust their travel plans for the winter storm.
“We join the Virginia Department of Transportation in urging motorists to adjust holiday travel plans if possible and to stay off the roads during the storm,” said Louisa County Chairman Duane Adams. “Our staff is coordinating with local offices, state agencies and area partners to ready response efforts for essential operations and increased safety.”
The county also provided the following information about local government activities ahead of the winter storm:
Special Election on Jan. 7
Precincts will be open on Tuesday, Jan. 7 for the special election. Saturday, Jan. 4 is the last day to vote early at the Registrar’s office located at 103 McDonald St., which is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Board of Supervisors Meeting
A Board of Supervisors meeting is scheduled for Monday, Jan. 6. According to the county, should it be necessary to reschedule, new meeting details will be available on the county's website.
Facility Closures & Delays
Should it be necessary to close the refuse and recycling sites, landfill and county offices, an alert will be added to the county's website.
General Services
According to the county, the General Services team is working with partners to treat select walkways, including at precinct locations. Staff is also prepared to utilize generators to power county facilities.
Fire & EMS
Officials said emergency response plans will be implemented as situations require.
The county said residents who wish to receive email or text alerts about rescheduled events or closures can sign up on its website for notifications.
