Update on winter storm potential Sunday and Monday
Jan 03, 2025
A winter storm watch remains in effect until for now and additional advisories and warnings are expected Saturday
Late Friday evening update here. Still more questions as to storms exact track and that is the key as to where the heaviest snow band will take shape.
As of this post late Friday, the arrival of the snow has slowed substantially, perhaps not really ramping up until mid/late day Sunday with the height of the storm Sunday night into early Monday morning.
So much to resolve when it comes to this storm track. The spread in snowfall not only for the city of Indianapolis but across all of central Indiana is STEEP - to say the least and depends on exactly where that low pressure lands.
With the latest data in Friday night, the spread in snowfall for the city of Indianapolis alone ranges from 2.2" to a whopping 18.0"!!!!
There are several machines generating double-digit totals but also many on the lower range. This is a CLEAR signal that there is still much to be resolved. Off over a half-dozen machine generated snowfall forecasts, the model average of snow is 8.5" for Indianapolis. There is a very definitive cutoff to the snow north of the storm track and a shift as little as 20 miles will make a profound difference.
I'm posting below that spread and the area-wide snowfall potential map. Again, this is not a 'final take' and we will know much more Saturday. Much can and will change before this storm shakes out but there is a very definitive cutoff to the snow north of the storm track. Stay up to date with our weekend weather team Saturday morning and night with the very latest. A winter storm warning will likely be hoisted for much of central Indiana on Saturday.
