District looks for 'Snow Team Heroes' as winter weather moves in
Jan 03, 2025
WASHINGTON (DC News Now) -- With snow predicted to impact the DMV Monday, leaders in the District are urging people to step up and help their neighbors.
“Our community matters. People helping people is a fundamental part of what we do,” said Dominique Scott, director of Serve DC.
The agency oversees the “Snow Team Hero” program, which launched in 2020.
Under the program, senior citizens and those with disabilities are able to sign up to have their sidewalks and driveways shoveled and salted. Then, volunteers—or snow team heroes—are matched with homes in their neighborhood to assist.

“It’s something neighbors can do to help others out. When we deploy snow team heroes, we deploy them in the areas they live in. Their wards, their neighborhoods and within a three-block radius, so this is a very intimate way to help those around you,” explained Scott.
This year, more than 600 people signed up for the service, so Scott said the demand for volunteers is high.
“When a volunteer signs up and deployment happens, we give them a phone call to make sure they are able to deploy when we need them,” she said. “Then we follow up with emails to make sure they have their matches and know where they need to go.”
Volunteers are given a shovel, gloves, scarf, salt and more.
“I’m excited for this,” said Adam Bankert, who signed up as a volunteer. “Just seeing some neighbors last year who needed a little extra help, and I found out there was a formal way through D.C. to do it, so I was very excited to sign up for it.”
Bankert, who is originally from Buffalo, New York, said shoveling snow doesn’t bother him.

He’s encouraging others to sign up too.
“I just recommend other people go through Serve DC, look up some opportunities to volunteer, help out the community,” he said. “I think people are really invested in doing that in the new year, so just look for the opportunities."
Lexi Wong also signed up.
“I’ve been meaning to volunteer for a while now,” she said. “I just wanted to try and give back to the community I think it’s important to try and get out of your bubble.”
Volunteers can sign up at any time by visiting www.snowteam.dc.gov.
Those in need of services can also register on that website.
Members of the Serve DC team will be handing out volunteer supplies Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Deanwood, Green Leaf and Columbia Heights recreation centers.
