CLOVIS, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – As Jan. 6 approaches, bakeries across the United States and Latin America are bustling with orders for the Rosca de Reyes. For Cafe Oaxaca in Clovis, the Rosca is more than a pastry - it’s a cherished tradition spanning over 50 years. The Rosca de Reyes translates to King's Cake. The Garcia family, who own and operate Cafe Oaxaca, say the cake holds deep cultural and religious significance for people across Latin America. Eugenia Garcia says her family’s baking legacy began long before they immigrated to the United States. She learned to bake from her father, who was a baker for over 60 years and passed down his skills to his seven daughters. Eugenia then taught her daughter Rosie Garcia and from there the tradition continued and evolved.  Rosie says the Rosca's design is meant to symbolize the circular crowns worn by the three kings who visited baby Jesus adorned with colorful "jewels," or in the case of the Rosca, fruits like figs and cactus. ”The circular shape also represents God’s eternal love, which has no beginning or end,” Garcia said. But Garcia says she and her siblings chose to not only uphold traditions but innovate as well. “Our Rosca looks a little bit different than your typical panaderia,” Garcia said. “We used to fight over who got the concha part on the Rosca as a family, so we decided to make the whole thing a concha. Now nobody can fight over it anymore.” The innovation, along with their variety of sizes and even vegan options, makes Cafe Oaxaca’s Roscas unique according to Garcia. But one tradition remains steadfast: each Rosca is made fresh. Garcia says that customers should wait until Jan. 6 to enjoy the treat, ensuring peak freshness, taste and texture. “As much as some people would want them today, we’re like, sorry, mejor el seis [better on the 6th],” Garcia said. “Please make an order, but como dijo mi mamá [as my mom said], it’s best for them to call and place an order. They will close.” As families gather to celebrate the Day of the Three Kings, the Garcia family’s Roscas remind everyone of the rich cultural and familial bonds this cherished holiday fosters.
