FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) - An SUV crashed through the front window of Uncle Harry’s New York Bagelry & Coffeehouse on Cedar and Shaw avenues Friday. Five people were treated for minor injuries. “About 11 a.m. this morning, [we] got reports that a vehicle had driven inside the restaurant here,” Fresno Fire Department spokesperson Josh Sellers said. About 25 customers were inside, enjoying their bagels when the silver Lexus crashed through the window. “My mom was like, ‘Oh my God!’ And I was like, ‘What happened?’” Seven-year-old Solomon said, recounting the events. Solomon’s knees were still shaking while speaking with Yourcentralvalley.com. He witnessed the crash from the parking lot with his family. “How would this happen? All I wanted was just a pizza bagel,” Solomon said. His family was waiting for their pickup orders when they heard the glass shatter. Their minds raced, preparing for the worst-case scenario. “I heard the glass shatter, so I thought there was a tsunami coming straight for us,” Solomon said. His mom, Elizabeth Castaneda, immediately thought to protect her family. “It's scary because with everything going on right now, like, you know, like the thing that happened in Bourbon Street in Louisiana… we're all kind of on edge. So for these things to happen, it's like, it does cause you to panic a little bit,” Castaneda said. To her relief, officials say the crash was not intentional. “It sounds like the driver just accidentally stepped on the wrong pedal. They stepped on the accelerator instead of the brake,” Seller said. Medics treated five people for minor injuries. Officials say it could have been much worse. “With over 25 people in the restaurant and a vehicle driving into it, it's amazing that there was no one killed,” Sellers said. Uncle Harry’s recently completed a major renovation to modernize the space. Now, they will start over from the beginning. “I hope they repair their business,” Solomon said. It will take a while for the doors to reopen, but when they do, Solomon’s family will be first in line for pizza bagels. “I’m looking forward to my savory bagel,” Castaneda said.
