FRESNO COUNTY, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) - A man has been arrested after a pursuit led to the discovery of stolen mail from different cities in his vehicle, the Fresno County Sheriff's Office said. The sheriff's office says a deputy attempted to make a traffic stop on a 2001 Chevy Tahoe for a vehicle violation near Olive and Pleasant avenues at 12:20 a.m. on Friday. The driver, 42-year-old Manuel Burciaga, refused to pull over. According to deputies, the driver initially drove at moderate speeds but later began to speed up and ran a stop sign. The pursuit was canceled for security reasons. A short time later, deputies say they spotted the vehicle on a nearby freeway, where the Burciaga allegedly threw checkbooks out of the window, later recovered by deputies. Sheriff's officials say he then stopped near Fresno Street and Gettysburg Avenue and let two people out of the vehicle. Those people were detained for questioning and later released. Burciaga, according to investigators, made his way back to Highway 180 and Van Ness, where a deputy successfully deployed a spike trip. The vehicle's tire was flattened and Burciaga continued driving, eventually stopping near Dudley and Lafayette avenues. The sheriff's office says he was taken into custody and he is a known gang member from Fresno. Additionally, hundreds of pieces of mail belonging to people in several valley cities - including Fresno, Clovis and Reedley - were also found in his vehicle. The Fresno County Sheriff's Office says he is currently only facing a charge for evading police and that charges of identity theft may be placed on his record later in the investigation. They also encourage anyone with information about this man or his vehicle to contact them at 559-600-3111.
