SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) -- A local restaurant is making headlines nationally for its vegan food. Civico 1845, located at 1845 India Street in Little Italy, was voted the nation's best vegan-friendly restaurant in 2024, according to plant-based foot and lifestyle magazine VegNews. The Italian restaurant, known for its Calabrian cuisine, offers a full plant-based menu with dishes like fried zucchini blossoms, eggplant parmigiana and baked almond ricotta. “Our vegan menu has been a major differentiator for us and a huge part of the restaurant’s success,” said Executive Chef Pietro Gallo. “We opened Civico 1845 with the passion to serve fresh, authentic Calabrian fare. It’s incredibly rewarding to see that hospitality recognized on a national scale.” Las Cuatro Milpas ordered closed by county health inspectors, records show Gallo and his brother Dario have owned and operated the restaurant for nearly 10 years. The business also has another location in Los Angeles called Civico 2064. True Food Kitchen, which has multiple locations nationally, and Triangle Tavern in Philadelphia placed second and third on the top vegan-friendly restaurant list, respectively. VegNews gives out awards annually for fine-dining restaurants, bakeries, doughnut shops and other eateries.
