Record warm Saturday then snow returns next week
Jan 03, 2025
A much more active weather pattern is shaping up for New Mexico. High winds and record high temperatures will return Saturday, but temperatures will be getting much colder stating Sunday with widespread snowfall possible next week.
It's been another mild and even warm afternoon for parts of New Mexico Friday, with places like Gallup, Silver City, Santa Fe, and Farmington breaking record high temperatures. A storm system passing over Colorado Saturday with bring high winds in the afternoon to New Mexico. Westerly winds will gust anywhere from 35 to 55 mph. This could cause areas of blowing dust and will bring a high fire danger. Even warmer weather will move in with the winds Saturday as well, with a record high temperature possible in Albuquerque. A cold front will move in from the northwest Saturday evening, beginning a cooling trend that will continue through next week. Sunday will feature breezy, but lighter winds and cooler temperatures. Some light snow will be possible early Sunday morning in far northeastern New Mexico.
Next week's weather get's a lot more interesting. Monday and Tuesday will be a quiet, but cooler days across New Mexico. A winter storm will begin moving in by late Tuesday afternoon, moving from north to south across the state. A gusty east canyon wind will develop in the Albuquerque Metro Tuesday evening as well. Temperatures get even colder on Wednesday as snow levels drop to valley floors, with almost all of New Mexico seeing high temperatures in the 30s. Light snow will even fall all the way down into southern New Mexico and the Mexican border Wednesday morning. Snowfall totals from this first round will be light to moderate, with the heaviest totals in the northern mountains and east-central New Mexico where 1" to 4" will be possible.
There's more uncertainty with what's going to happen with this storm system Wednesday evening through Friday morning. Right now, it looks like more snow is likely across the southern half of the state, especially on Thursday, where a dusting to a couple inches of snow will be likely south of I-40. Travel impacts don't look to be widespread, but a few icy spots will be possible across New Mexico, with the slickest travel across the higher elevations. This storm will move out by Friday night, but cooler temperatures stick around.
