RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- A portion of Forest Hill Avenue in Richmond will see alternating closures for months as work on a water main replacement project continues, prompted by the April 2024 collapse of an area sewer main. Work on water mains and laterals along Forest Hill Avenue began in May 2024, about a month after a sewer main collapsed on that roadway. Since then, crews with the city's Department of Public Utilities have been working to replace not only the collapsed water main, but multiple other deteriorating ones in the area. The next stage of the project is scheduled to begin on Monday, Jan. 6, weather permitting. Forest Hill Avenue between W. 45th and W. 46th streets will see daily, alternating lane closures from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. According to the department, no sidewalks, businesses or residences will be blocked. PREVIOUS: ‘Be patient with us,’ Richmond City officials provide update on long-term Forest Hill Avenue construction If any work being done will impact a business' water service, the department will reportedly deliver a "'door hanger' style tag" to the impacted business at least 48 hours before that work is carried out. This construction is expected to take at least four months. In a press release sent to 8News, the department said the project is expected to be completed in April. It then added that the work is "expected to be completed in six months." On the city's website, a flyer on this project states that the work "will continue for four months." Both documents clarified that work could take longer if weather or "other unforeseen circumstances" caused delays. Anyone with questions on this project can contact the city's Department of Public Utilities at 804-646-8336.
