How you can empower girls through after school program
Jan 03, 2025
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — A program that gives young girls an active outlet is getting ready to launch again this spring, however, they need your help.
Girls on the Run, which involves 3rd through 8th graders, is about more than running.
"So we teach girls skills that focus on social, emotional and physical health, but then we incorporate that all with running activities so that the girls are able to focus on having fun as well as building those connections," Girls on the Run program manager, Jasmina Miller said.
Lesya Shkinder has coached with Girls on the Run for about 5 years.
"I got an email from school– Southeast Tech when I was in Southeast Tech, that they needed volunteers and I was like, Oh, that's awesome. I wanted to do that. So then I came, I did a little training. I really loved it. And ever since, every time I had such a good time with the girls," Girls on the Run Coach, Lesya Shkinder said.
She's a big fan of the program because, while she's investing time into younger girls, it also benefits her.
"It is like, not only empowering the girls, it empowers you too and you just feel so much better because you make a difference in their lives," Shkinder said.

With the new season approaching, coaches are needed.
"Coach commitment is one day a week for the ten-week season. Teams do meet twice a week, so there is a little bit of flexibility there and then practice is an hour and a half long,"
And they aren't just needed in Sioux Falls. The program also runs in Brookings, Pierre, Rapid City, and other cities across KELOLAND.
It's all in an effort to help young girls learn more about life skills, physical health, and how to build friendships.
"One of the girls one time told me she's like, I love talking to you so much and I just feel like I'm not judged. And it was so special. So that's what keeps inspiring me to keep going and just being there and encouraging them," Shkinder said.
"The finish line is just the beginning of what they can accomplish," Miller said.
Sign-up for coaches is open now and needs to be finalized by mid-February.
