NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — The City of New Orleans began tearing down a building that partially collapsed. The building is just off of Magazine Street, at the corner of Felicity Street and Hastings Place. The collapse happened Monday afternoon sending bricks into the street crushing at least one car. New Orleans Councilwoman Lesli Harris applauds the demolition, saying she wants the city to adopt new laws to help prevent building collapses. Memorial on Bourbon Street to remember terror attack victims "We're an old city, and what we need to do as a city council is start to explore what we can do to make sure that owners are having their older buildings inspected regularly, making sure that the structures are sound and if not, that they are shored up," said Harris. "There is money that is available through federal grants, especially for historic buildings. Again, we need to make sure that property owners are making sure that their buildings are structurally sound." In order to demolish the building, Entergy had to cap the gas line and cut power to the surrounding neighborhood for several hours.
