HONOLULU (KHON2) -- Comedian Frank Delima announced it's time to slow down. Health issues are forcing the 75-year-old to only do select shows and stop his other true love -- inspiring children. Download the free KHON2 app for iOS or Android to stay informed on the latest news "Everybody says 'you don't look 76' and '76 not old these days,'" said Delima "I said you try get up in the morning." Delima said he could've retired from show business 10 years ago since his regular shows have slowed down. But he is giving up his student enrichment program which started in 1980. At its peak, it was three schools a day, five days a week across the state. Hawaiʻi soldier awarded Medal of Honor for ‘extraordinary heroism, selflessness’ "Kindergarten they don't know me right, until I saw 422-2222, then the eyes light up," he said. "I'm gonna miss the schools a whole lot. I'm gonna miss those eyes, looking at me and waiting to help them laugh, and then also, they allow me, they have respect enough for me that they let me tell my message." That message - laugh twice a day, but always get permission before telling a joke because people might take it the wrong way and take care of your health. "I was not meant to be a sumo, but I got big enough to be a sumo and I was very unhealthy," said Delima. "That's why doctor made me lose 100 pounds. 100 Pounds? Yeah, 100 pounds." Delima's health forced him to cut down on his school visits. But it didn't stop him. He also visited kupuna during the summers. "They all gather to the living room and I talk to them, I just talk story for an hour, make them laugh," he said. "You know you get the ones falling asleep but you know that's not because of me. Because they tired." Delima's last show for the time being will be this Sunday, Jan. 5 at Hawaii Theater with local comics Augie T, Paul Ogata and Andy Bumatai. "He gave me my first paid gig - $10 for a set of comedy at the Noodle Shop," said Bumatai. "That's why I have so much respect for him. Today when we work together, he gives me double that. So I'm gonna miss him." Get Hawaii's latest morning news delivered to your inbox, sign up for News 2 You Delima said you can expect all your favorite characters. This is gonna be the last concert until they pull me out of, and they say okay let's do one more in two years or something like that. Then maybe. But who knows what's gonna happen in two years."
