Fewer people moving to and from North Dakota, UHaul study finds
Jan 03, 2025
NORTH DAKOTA (KXNET) — The start of a new year gives people a chance to start fresh. For some people, that involves moving to a new state.
A new study by U-Haul analyzed the trends of North Dakotans who moved into and out of the state in 2024, and found that both the number of those coming in and going out is decreasing.
North Dakota is the No. 31 growth state of 2024, according to U-Haul® Growth Index data analyzing one-way customer transactions during the past year. The Peace Garden State rose one spot from its 2023 ranking. However, looking at year-over-year changes, U-Haul arrivals into the state fell 3%, while departures fell 2.5%.
The number of total arrivals by U-Haul customers was pretty similar to the number of total departures last year, with those arriving accounting for 49.7% of one-way traffic and those leaving accounting for 50.3% of the traffic.
Are people moving out of North Dakota?
Some of the cities in North Dakota leading the way in growth include Bottineau, Devils Lake, Jamestown, Lisbon, Mandan, Wahpeton, Watford City, and West Fargo. Grand Forks and Williston both broke even in 2024.
The top five states in the country in U-Haul growth are South Carolina, Texas, North Carolina, Florida, and Tennessee. The bottom five are Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, and California. The Golden State ranks 50th for the fifth year in a row with the largest net loss of one-way U-Haul customers.
Oklahoma (+30), Indiana (+19), and Maine (+18) saw the biggest rises year over year, while Colorado (-31), Nevada (-24), Wyoming (-22), and New Mexico (-21), fell the most.
U-Haul ranks states according to each state’s net gain (or loss) of one-way equipment from customer transactions in a calendar year. The U-Haul Growth Index is compiled from more than 2.5 million one-way U-Haul truck, trailer and U-Box® portable moving container transactions that happen every year across the U.S. and Canada.
