WASHINGTON (DC News Now) -- Law enforcement agencies in D.C. are gearing up for a busy start to 2025, with three major events on the calendar over the next several weeks. The first of those is happening in just a few days, with the election certification on Jan. 6, events surrounding a state funeral planned for the late former President Jimmy Carter on Jan. 7 through Jan. 9, followed by a second inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump on Jan. 20. Law enforcement officials from the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD), U.S. Secret Service, FBI Washington Field Office, U.S. Capital Police (USCP) and the D.C. National Guard held a public safety briefing Friday. Snow, snow squalls in DC, Maryland, Virginia The agencies said there are no known credible threats to the region for these events and no intelligence of mass demonstrations or large crowds planning to gather on Jan. 6. They described the current climate surrounding the events as a "heightened threat environment." Recent events, like the terrorist attack in New Orleans, and the Jan. 6, 2021 Capitol riots are top of mind for officers heading into a busy few weeks. "As our nation struggles to maintain a sense of safety in light of recent mass killings and acts of terrorism, the eyes of the world will be on the Capitol to see what happens on Jan. 6th," USCP Chief Tom Manger, said. Manger, who took over the department after the Jan. 6 insurrection, said his department has made major changes in the years since, implementing all 103 recommendations made in after-action reports following the attack at the Capitol. He said his officers are ready for whatever comes their way. "These are officers who want to be on the frontlines of what is happening here," Manger said. Cold Case: Fairfax County police work to solve murder 25 years later Dozens of local and federal agencies are all working in coordination with each other during these three National Special Security Events (NSSEs). "That has never happened before, we have not had three NSSEs over a 15-day period before," Matt McCool, Special Agent in Charge for the Secret Service's Washington Field Office, said. Immediately following the election certification on Jan. 6, law enforcement's focus will shift to events honoring the late President Jimmy Carter scheduled in D.C. next week. They are then followed by events surrounding the second inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump. MPD Police Chief Pamela Smith said local and federal law enforcement agencies were already on high alert heading into a busy January, but recent events have the department on extra-high alert. "We want to be very clear. There is no tolerance for violence, rioting, destruction of property that threatens the safety and security of our city," Smith said. Smith said close to 4,000 additional officers from across the region and the nation will move into D.C. in the coming days and weeks, and 500 D.C. National Guard soldiers are approved to be on standby for Jan. 6. DC road closures for certification of presidential election, state funeral of former President Carter Requests are still pending for 800 guard members and airmen for the inauguration, according to Smith. At this time, agencies are planning for the National Guard to provide supplemental security around event perimeters and aid in traffic control.
