Prince George's County leaders, businesses lend helping hand to fix woman's damaged roof

CAPITOL HEIGHTS, Md. (DC News Now) -- Just before the DMV is about to get its first winter storm of the season, one local woman is getting some much-needed repairs on her roof.
She said that wouldn't be possible without the help of one county council member and a local business.
"I'm happy, blessed, joyful, thankful, and all the above," Towanna Wright said.
That was Wright's reaction after learning the home she had been living in for the last 25 years was going to be fixed after dealing with several issues with her roof.

"I started seeing the shingles in my driveway when it was a hard wind, and that told me something was going on and then the leak came," Wright said.
Wright said due to her being asthmatic, the constant leak has made living in the house difficult.
She then looked to a close friend for help.
"I knew that there was a dire need that she needed assistance," friend Phyllis Wright said. "I didn't want it to get any worse, and I knew that this was an emergency situation and that it needed to be done."
Council Member At-Large Calvin Hawkins was the first to answer the call for help and created a plan so that Wright's roof would be fixed without her paying out of pocket and before the winter season kicked off.
"Thinking about the story, for me, it was always about how many more citizens are living like this, how many more out here suffering in their own silence," Council Member Hawkins said. "We can't help everyone but we can do our part."
With the help of Paul Lindsay and the rest of his team, they were able to get the job done.
"For us to be able to come in and take the skills that we've acquired for years and use our skills to help those who need help, along with the county councilman and it worked out perfectly, everybody walks away happy, we're happy she's taken care of the next 30 years," owner of Lindsay Roofing Paul Lindsay said.
"It was praise [to] the lord that he's answering prayers and he's he sent the correct and the right people," Wright said.
