With the first meeting of 2025, like many governmental bodies, Trenton City Council has started the year fresh with new leadership. Yazminelly Gonzalez was unanimously voted in as Council President after last year’s Vice President Jenna Figueroa Kettenburg did not get the votes to take the chair. The President and Vice President of council are voted in for one-year terms, with the previous VP given first consideration and vote to take over as president. After voting in Gonzalez, the City Council voted Jasi Makae Edwards as Vice President for 2025. By aligning our efforts, we can tackle pressing challenges and position Trenton for long-term success. I will implement the boards that have been created and reactivated so that we can help to create opportunities for residents to actively participate in shaping city programs and policies.” “I am incredibly honored and humbled to have been elected as council president. This role represents a big responsibility, and I am committed to leading with integrity, fairness, transparency, and a dedication to the people of Trenton.” When asked about her experience on the council so far, Gonzalez shared what she loves most about the position. “The most rewarding part of serving on the council has been working directly with the residents of Trenton,” Gonzalez said. “Hearing their concerns, celebrating their successes, and advocating for solutions that improve their daily lives.” “Councilmembers dedicate many hours to serving this city and it can be very time-consuming. Learning how to balance all of it was the biggest challenge thus far,” Gonzalez replied when asked about her biggest challenges as a council member. “I continue to be committed to making Trenton a city where every resident feels safe, supported, and empowered to succeed. The upcoming year will be about action and implementing plans that address pressing issues like public safety, housing, and economic growth while ensuring that the voices of our residents guide every decision we make,” Gonzalez said “I also believe in the power of community. I encourage everyone to stay engaged, share their concerns, and be part of the process. Together, we can make Trenton a city we are all proud to call home.” Trenton City Council applauds during the January 2023 inauguration ceremony at the Trenton War Memorial. left to right: Jennifer Williams, Joe Harrison, Yazminelly Gonzalez, Teska Frisby, Jenna Figueroa Kettenburg, Crystal Feliciano, and Jasi Edwards.(John Berry/Trentonian file photo)
