MANHATTAN (KSNT) - A Manhattan-based hospital is putting temporary restrictions on visitations in place as seasonal illnesses increase. Ascension Via Christi announced Friday, Jan. 3 that its hospital in Manhattan and the Wamego Health Center are taking additional precautions to prevent the spread of seasonal illnesses this winter. With the recent rise of seasonal respiratory and gastrointestinal illnesses in the community, these locations, along with the emergency departments, will enforce in-person visitation restrictions. "While family plays a key role in the healing process, patient and staff safety continues to be our top priority," Robert Copple, president of Via Christi Hospital in Manhattan said. Friends and families of patients at the hospitals and emergency departments are asked not to make in-person visits if they are or have experienced cold or flu-like symptoms for at least 48 hours after the symptoms have passed, according to a press release from Ascension Via Christi. These symptoms can include cough, fever, shortness of breath, runny nose, nasal congestion or sore throat. Warming centers open soon in northeast Kansas for winter weather If you have recently had COVID-19, the hospital asks that you wait 10 days after the onset of the illness to visit any patients. "If there are extenuating circumstances, patients and families should talk to their nurse, who will discuss the concern with the healthcare team to determine appropriate visitation that is safe for everyone concerned," Copple said. People visiting the hospital are highly encouraged to wear a mask. Masks will be provided at the hospital if needed. Also, people visiting patients in the hospital must be 12-years-old or older until further notice. While staff already washed their hands and/or uses alcohol based hand sanitizer while going into or leaving a patients' room, visitors are encouraged to follow that same practice.
