Minority leadership unchanged in blue Massachusetts

BOSTON, Mass. (WWLP)--Republican leadership is unchanged in the Massachusetts state legislature for the new term, with Minority Leaders Bruce Tarr and Brad Jones in the Senate and House respectively.
Minority leaders are selected by a vote from each branch, and this term's leaders were no surprise. Gloucester Senator Bruce Tarr sailed to another term as minority leader in his branch, a position he has held since 2011. He had a message of togetherness, and putting up a united front in the 194th session, thanking the senate president for her partnership.

"We continue to work together and defy ongoing and disturbing trends of division and paralysis that are plaguing other legislative bodies," said Tarr.
Twenty-three year House minority leader Brad Jones had a challenger this session in outspoken Billerica Republican Marc Lombardo. After a private caucus on Wednesday, Jones told reporters that he won reelection by a vote of 19 to 5. Jones also called for collaboration and respectful debate with House democrats to advance priority bills.
"But in those instances where common ground and consensus are elusive, or even impossible, let us debate and highlight those differences in the finest traditions of our wonderful institution and our democracy," said Jones.
Republicans in the House and Senate have struggled for decades to pass priority policies due to the blue supermajority nature of the legislature. During this term, 25 out of 160 House members and 5 out of 30 Senators are members of the Republican party.
