SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) — The longtime organist for the Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Baptist has died at 95. Patricia Barragan Schreck, 95, died on Thursday, Jan. 2. She served as the organist and choir director at the Cathedral for 66 years. She became the organist at 16 years old in February of 1946. Schreck managed several choirs including the Cathedral Men’s Choir, the Women’s Choir, the Savannah Catholic Deanery Choir and the SVA Alumnae Chorus. She was also the music director at St. Vincent’s Academy where she taught church music and choral singing for 47 years. During her time at St. Vincent's, she composed the Academy's Alma Mater and their Fight Song which is still sung by students today. Her impact on the Academy continued, with a choral Christmas Candlelight Service which continues as a St. Vincent’s Christmas tradition to this day. For her work in the church and Savannah, Schreck was awarded a medal by Saint Pope John Paul II and a key to the city by the City of Savannah. Savannah also issued a proclamation declaring “Patty Barragan Schreck Day” on May 31, 1981. Another proclamation was given again on March 15, 1989, by the Irish community for her years of devotion to Irish music in Savannah.  Schreck was given many other awards for her work, which can be read about in her obituary. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 5 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 6, at the Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Baptist. A private burial for family and friends will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 7, in the Catholic Cemetery.  Remembrances may be sent to the Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Baptist, to St. Vincent’s Academy, Attn: Patty Schreck Music Scholarship Fund or to Hospice Savannah.
