StormTracker 8: Cold air arrives; Winter storm Sunday night and Monday
Jan 03, 2025
RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC)--Much colder air and a winter storm are looming for the weekend in the area with Sunday night and Monday morning looking to be very messy for us.
Early this evening a few sprinkles or snow flurries are possible as a strong cold front moves by.
Overnight the skies will become clear, the winds will start to pick up and lows will fall into the lower to middle 20s.
Saturday will be sunny, with gusty winds and highs only in the upper 30s.
Sunday morning when you wake up, we will see fair skies over us, but it will be cold with temperatures in the teens to around 20.
The next weather system is on the way for Sunday and into Monday. Take in mind that I think these forecast maps are a smidge fast on the arrival of the storm by maybe 2 to 3 hours.
We will see increasing clouds in the area with highs in the mid to upper 30s.
Radar will start to show snow moving in over us during the late afternoon, but it might not be reaching the ground. Snow will pick up into the evening hours over us and we are going to start to see it accumulating. Much of the area will have about 1” by 10pm
As we go overnight, all of the models except for the European (which has not done well the past two winters here) show a nose of warm air moving in aloft.
That will allow for us to change over to sleet after midnight through the wee hours of the night and then to freezing rain.
Freezing rain will change from south to north during the morning hours before taking a break.
On the backside of the storm, as it reforms off the coast, we will see a change back to some light snow. The bottom line on this is 1" of snow which will melt with the rain South of US-460. 2"-4" of snow and sleet from the Tri-Cities northward to north of Ashland. West and northwest of that we will see 4"-7" with lesser sleet and freezing rain--but that is still and issue there. NW Virginia could see 8"-12"
The rest of next week is just cold over us until we get to Friday night and Saturday.
That is when the long range models hint at doing this all again.
