RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- Virginians are voicing their opinions about Governor Glenn Youngkin’s recently proposed budget amendments. On Friday, members of the General Assembly heard from everyday citizens during a series of virtual hearings on Youngkin’s preferred changes to the state’s two-year budget.  “I commend the governor’s commitment to lowering the cost of living for Virginians,” said Virginia resident Melody Clarke.  “Governor Glenn Youngkin’s intent seems to differ from reality,” said Virginia resident Lois Yankah. Clarke applauded Youngkin for proposing various tax relief measures including Youngkin’s proposed plans to create a tax credit to help offset the cost of the car tax for working Virginians.  “These initiatives recognize the financial strain that many Virginians face and provide practical steps toward alleviating that burden,” Clarke said. Meanwhile, Yankah was critical of Youngkin’s plan to strip funding from local law enforcement agencies that don’t comply with detainer requests from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. “A local law enforcement might choose to go after immigrants in order to get cash for their agency rather than seeking neutral administration of justice,” Yankah said. The General Assembly will consider Youngkin’s proposed budget amendments during its regular session, which begins Jan. 8.
