Richmond prepares for incoming powerful winter storm
Jan 03, 2025
RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- Richmond officials are asking residents to prepare for the first winter storm of 2025, which should hit Central Virginia on Sunday.
Richmonders could see a mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain as early as 7 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 5, according to Stormtracker8 meteorologists. City leaders want to ensure that residents are ready for the effects of this powerful winter storm, which will impact Virginia through Monday, Jan. 6.
“As we prepare for the impending winter weather that is expected to impact our region, we want to assure our community that we are fully equipped and ready to respond,” said Stephen Willoughby, director of Emergency Communications, Preparedness and Response, in a Jan. 3 press release. “Please take necessary precautions: stay informed through official channels, and limit travel if possible during these potentially hazardous weather conditions.”
The city's Inclement Weather Shelter -- located at 1900 Chamberlayne Aveue -- will be open 24/7 through at least part of the storm. Additional space will be provided if needed, according to the release.

In the release, city officials said the shelter would end those 24/7 operations at 8 a.m. on Jan. 8.
Additionally, the city's Department of Public Works is pretreating roads throughout the city to prepare for the storm. Officials ask that drivers be mindful of these workers.
Officials also provided the following list of tips on how to both prepare for and stay safe during this coming storm:
Monitor weather conditions throughout the storm. Keep on top of local forecasts. You can visit the National Weather Service's website or check out our Stormtracker8 coverage.
Secure your home. Reinforce windows, roods, doors and garage doors.
Prepare for possible power outages. Have emergency supplies like food, water and flashlights available. Contact your service provider if you lose power. For the vast majority of Richmonders, this is Dominion Energy. That number is 1-866-366-4357.
Limit your time spent outside. Bundle up if you have to go out. Be cautious of icy surfaces, which could be a fall hazard.
Make sure your vehicle is prepared for winter weather. Check vital parts of your car, like your tires and the level of your antifreeze.
If you have to drive, be cautious. Allow extra time, drive slowly and leave plenty of room for other drivers.
