NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — A 50-year-old Norfolk woman faces a second-degree murder charge in connection to the death of her four-month-old granddaughter, which occurred on April 22, 2024.
The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Norfolk ruled the death as a homicide.
Police were dispatched to the 100 block of Suburban Parkway for the report of an unresponsive infant shortly before 12:20 a.m.
When they arrived, the infant was taken to the hospital, where she was pronounced deceased by medical providers.
In July, the medical examiner determined the baby died of an overdose from anti-psychotic medication prescribed to treat mood disorders.
A search warrant for Haskins' medical records confirmed she was prescribed the medication found in the baby's blood.
Alvetta J. Haskins, 50, was taken into custody on Jan. 1 and is currently being held at the Norfolk City Jail without bond. Her bond hearing is scheduled for Jan. 8.
