MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Weekend storms are paving the way for freezing temperatures which could possibly lead to dangerous road conditions. The Tennessee Department of Transportation says they are sticking to their normal routine of making sure our roadways are ready, but the City of Memphis has a new plan. It kicked off on January 1 and may come in handy next week. Weekend storms pave way for freezing temps "We load our trucks with salt and tanks up with salt brine then we hit those trouble spots," said Nicole Lawrence with TDOT. And now that winter weather is near, TDOT is already along I-40 pretreating roadways. “In the Memphis area, we are monitoring all the bridges and overpasses and flyovers. We’ll be hitting those spots as a precautionary measure today,” said Lawrence. Meanwhile, the City of Memphis is taking a new route when snow and ice hit. This map shows all city-treated roadways in red. Plus, instead of a salt/sand mix, crews will treat the streets with straight salt. "Preparing for winter weather is really a year-round event," said Lawrence. For those still concerned, when Monday hits, call 511 or check the TDOT Smart Way Map. The city says to be patient, Stay alert, and be prepared.
