Jan 03, 2025
INDIANAPOLIS — A man is dead and another is in critical condition after a shooting on Indy's near southwest side.
The shooting
Indianapolis Metro police crews were called around 3:35 p.m. to the 1800 block of Howard Street for a person shot. Upon arrival, IMPD officers found two adult males suffering from gunshot wounds.
IMPD confirmed that one of the men was pronounced dead on scene. The second victim - who is reportedly in critical condition - was taken to a local hospital for treatment.
Officer Tommy Thompson said that officers responding to the scene also found a red car parked near 1801 Howard Street that had been shot. IMPD is now working to get a search warrant for both the car and a nearby building.
No suspect information was provided by IMPD. Officer Thompson said the department is asking that anyone with information on the shooting call 911 immediately. To remain anonymous, call Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana at (317) 262-TIPS.
'Not acceptable'
This is already Indianapolis' third deadly shooting of the New Year.
"We're starting 2025 off in the wrong direction," Thompson said. "Three times in three days we have individuals who are no longer with us and families grieving. This can't continue. We said that last year and we're saying it again."
Late Thursday night, 29-year-old Sebastian Jones was killed and two others were wounded when police believe a gun sale turned violent at a home on Capsella lane on Indy’s southeast side.
A few hours later, 53-year-old Charles Arnold Junior was found shot to death just after 4 a.m. Friday in Crown Hill near 30th and Capitol.
"I'm very passionate about the people in this community," Thompson said. "This is not acceptable. I am grieving. This community does not deserve this, to have people shot. It's scary and it's not tolerable."
