Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources advising residents to be aware of wilted oak trees
Jan 03, 2025
(WFRV) - The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is advising residents to be informed and work on their oak trees should any live on their property.
In a DNR Facebook post, officials say it is an ideal time to work on trees especially before the spring begins.
The risk of deadly diseases, such as oak wilting increases significantly in the spring. According to the post, oak wilt is the most destructive oak disease in the state, as it kills thousands of healthy trees annually.

It's more common in the lower two-thirds of Wisconsin but has been spreading north every year. Oak wilt is typically spread by tiny beetles that carry fungus from infected trees.
These beetles are not active in cold weather, so it is highly recommended to work on oaks during the winter months to limit or prevent any further disease.
