GREEN BAY, Wis. (WFRV) - At 12:30 a.m. on Friday, Green Bay Public Works was notified of an issue at the Ray Nitschke Memorial Bridge in downtown Green Bay.
"There was a vessel outbound," said Steven Grenier, the director of Green Bay Public Works. "One side went up; one did not."

A release issued Friday morning stated:
The Green Bay Public Works Department is announcing the closure of the Ray Nitschke Memorial Bridge (Dousman and Main Streets) to vehicular traffic beginning at 9 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 3, 2025, until further notice.
Grenier explained that when the bridge sensed an issue, it stopped itself to prevent major damage.
"What we found out at the end of the day was there was just simply an electrical short in one of the pieces of equipment," he said. "Staff was able to get in there, fix that one piece of electrical apparatus, and immediately the bridge started responding."
He emphasized that mechanical malfunctions are common and do not necessarily indicate structural issues.

"There's a lot of moving parts inside of a bridge," Grenier said. "When you have what we refer to as an electrohydraulic system—it's a hydraulically operated bridge, but there are electrical components that drive the pumps to move the hydraulic fluid. What we were able to find and fix in a matter of an hour or two didn't cause a major issue that would take a bridge out of service for two years."
Crews worked through the morning and into the afternoon, running tests before reopening the bridge to vehicular traffic around 2 p.m.
