Department of Natural Resources hosts Free Fishing Weekend throughout Wisconsin
Jan 03, 2025
MADISON, Wis. (WFRV) - As many continue their beloved hobby of ice fishing on a cold winter weekend, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is inviting everybody to join in.
From January 18 to 19, everybody is invited to go fishing, regardless of age or fishing license status. The DNR is calling it the Free Fishing Weekend, as officials wish for everybody to partake in the fun of winter fishing.

Though a fishing license and/or trout/salmon stamp are normally required, this is a special weekend, however there are still a few regulations in effect.
Bag limits
Size limits
Species restrictions
All other 2024-2025 Hook and Line regulations are in effect as well, and they can be viewed on the DNR's website.
Most trout streams are open during catch-and-release season on Free Fishing Weekend, though some are closed. Those with questions are advised to review the trout regulations or check with local biologists for information.
Only artificial lures are allowed for open trout streams, and all catches must be released. Anybody who plans to keep a fish is reminded to review the DNR's Safe Eating Guidelines here.
The DNR also urges fishers to be wary of conditions, as ice is never 100% safe. The following tips are recommended:
Wear warm and water-resistant layers
Take advantage of sturdy and waterproof boots with spiked creepers for traction
Bring extra pairs of hats and gloves
Bring ice claws and a rescue throw rope.

The DNR does not monitor the ice conditions, but local bait shops and fishing clubs are good resources for up-to-date answers for those questions.
