FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE)— The Wells County Highway Department spent much of Friday preparing for potential snow on Sunday and Monday. The storm's impact on northeast Indiana was still relatively uncertain on Friday, with the sharp gradient between potentially heavy and light snow totals. Regardless, the Wells County Highway Department is prepared, according to Superintendent Shawn Bonar. "We prepped all of our trucks last week, or earlier last week even though we had the holiday of New Year," Bonar said. According to Bonar, even light snow amounts can cause travel problems in rural areas of the county. "Even if some of the counties don't see as much snow as what is expected," Bonar said. "A few inches can make a big impact on the country roads." Any amount of wind can make a cleared road covered again in minutes. "Last time we had the high winds with the two inches last year, we had multiple cars stuck in drifts and ditches," Bonar said. "And there wasn't anything we could do because we would plow that road and within 30 minutes there was a drift on it where a car would get stuck." The Wells County Highway Department takes care of more than 700 miles of roadway. It takes the department 6 to 8 hours to clear the roads if everything goes smoothly. Bonar recommended staying home Sunday night, especially for those who live in the country. "Anybody in the rural areas, if you don't have the vehicle to be out, you probably shouldn't be," Bonar said. "Or if you don't have a purpose to be out you shouldn't be." Bonar recommended having a blanket and water in your car at all times in case you get stuck.
