Congress has a big agenda

WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) - With the new Congress now in session, lawmakers have a busy agenda in front of them from government funding to cabinet confirmations.
Seventy-five new members were sworn in Friday as the 119th Congress kicked off.
"We have a bold governing agenda under President Trump's leadership,” said Rep. Nick Langworthy (R-N.Y.).
Republicans will hold a trifecta in Washington with a razor thin majority in the House and 53 seats in the Senate.
"This is going to be another tough Congress,” said Rep. Jill Tokuda (D-Hawaii.).
Gop lawmakers, like New York’s Nick Langworthy, say carrying out President-elect Donald Trump's agenda and securing the southern border is a top priority.
"We have to seal that southern border,” said Langworthy.
Some Democrats agree there needs to be action on the border.
California Congressman Lou Correa says he thinks there's room for compromise.
"There's a lot of common ground there. I think, first, we need to start out by speaking with each other, not at each other,” said Correa.
Congressman Jake Auchincloss (D-Mass.) says lawmakers also want to make life more affordable for Americans.
"There are three bipartisan vetted bills to put on the floor right now. One to lower prescription drug costs through health insurance reforms,” said Auchincloss.
Debate over government funding will soon be back on the agenda. The latest short-term spending measure expires in March.
Kentucky Republican Andy Barr says Congress needs to spend more responsibly.
"Spending cuts are very, very important to start forcing the government to live within its means,” said Barr.
Meanwhile, the Senate will soon hold Cabinet confirmation hearings.
Senator Mazie Hirono (D-Hawaii.) says she'll look closely at each nominee.
"My concerns will surround their experience, what they bring to the table,” said Hirono.
Cabinet hearings will start in the next few weeks.
