Warmth for the weekend, but cold arrives later Sunday
Jan 03, 2025
AUSTIN (KXAN) -- As clouds break apart in a few spots we're seeing temperatures pushing into the middle and even upper 60s.
Low clouds will fill back in this evening giving way to a cloudy night with some areas of fog or drizzle. A few stray rain showers will be possible Saturday morning through midday under the gray skies.
Breaks of sun look to be a better bet for Saturday afternoon helping temperatures reach the low 70s.
Saturday afternoon breaks of sun are expected
Sunday will be a transition day between our recent warmth and the coldest air since last winter.
We'll start with some clouds and even a spotty shower or two in our eastern counties. Drier air will take away the clouds by mid-morning and bring us sunshine and warmth for late morning and midday. Meanwhile a strong cold front arrives during the afternoon bringing a temperature plunge from north to south.
Weekend forecast
Sunday afternoon highs in the Hill Country may not get out of the 50s, whereas the Austin Metro and especially our eastern counties should get into the low 70s or warmer.
Temperatures at midday Sunday
As the front arrives temperatures will drop quickly later in the afternoon and evening.
Plan on a widespread freeze Monday morning with lows below freezing everywhere. This would bring Austin's first freeze since last winter at Camp Mabry, although most of the rest of the area has already had temperatures drop to 32º over the last couple of months.
Monday morning lows
Temperatures will stay cold next week with sub-freezing nights and 40s during the day.
FIRST WARNING: Sub-freezing nights and the chance for a wintry mix next week
The big question: Will we see wintry weather? While cold air will be in place, the moisture is uncertain, with computer models showing varying forecasts. Our 'First Warning Blog' should be able to provide the latest updates.
