Patchy fog will be possible in western Kansas this morning, with a Dense Fog Advisory in effect through 10 AM. It will also be well below freezing, so a slick spot or two will be possible from fog settling onto elevated surfaces. Today will be chilly for most, but fairly typical weather for early January. Gentle winds with highs in the 30s and 40s, while southwest Kansas may sneak in a few 50s. Dropping to the teens and 20s tonight as clouds begin to build. Winter weather is expected over the weekend. Winter Storm Watches and Winter Weather Advisories have been issued, covering 12 PM Saturday through 6 PM Sunday. Drizzle begins to develop Saturday morning, and the afternoon may see travel conditions deteriorate as temperatures hover near or below freezing. Areas north of Wichita will be more likely to have temperatures below freezing by Saturday afternoon. The storm system will ramp up Saturday night into Sunday morning. Colder air crashes into western Kansas and switches any moisture over to snow quickly, while we hover near freezing closer to Wichita. In the wintry mix zone, freezing rain and sleet will dominate and bring the possibility of accumulating ice which could lead to black ice and power outages. This is most likely in a corridor near and just north of Wichita. Sunday morning, the cold front will reach Wichita and heavy snow begins in earnest near daybreak. Snow persists through the afternoon and will be heavy at times. The heaviest snow will favor the northern half of Kansas, but there will be accumulations likely as far south as the Oklahoma state line. Travel will be treacherous and should be avoided Sunday, with power outages possible After the storm passes, snowpack and arctic air will bring some bitter cold with highs in the teens and 20s for the first half of the coming week. A few more flakes may fly for western Kansas on Tuesday, but this will be on the lighter side. KSN Storm Track 3 Forecast from Meteorologist Jack Maney: Wichita: Today: Partly cloudy.
