The National Weather Service is forecasting a snow event Friday afternoon into the evening, with small amounts and the possibility of larger amounts Sunday into Monday. A winter weather advisory is in effect from 3 to 10 p.m. Friday. “A weak system will pass through the area late today, bringing a chance for some light snowfall to portions of the area,” the NWS discussion for the Philadelphia region in Mount Holly, N.J. stated. “High pressure will then build to our west with cold and dry conditions over the weekend. “A low pressure system will pass from the Ohio Valley east to the Mid Atlantic Sunday night into Monday, likely bringing more widespread snowfall accumulations to the region. Cold and dry high pressure will then prevail across the region through the end of the week with below normal temperatures.” For Friday, Berks is forecast to get less than 1 inch of snow. Bucks, Chester, Montgomery and Delaware counties and southwestern New Jersey fall in the 1 to 2 inches prediction on the NWS map. Temperatures are expected to climb into the mid to upper 30s and low 40s before the precipitation arrives. “A wave of low pressure will move in this afternoon, bringing some rain and snow showers to areas south of I-78,” the NWS forecast discussion said. “Temperatures, especially south of Wilmington, will be supportive of rain to start, with temperatures cooling as we get into the evening due to wet-bulbing and the loss of daytime heating, and precipitation should mainly be all snow by the late afternoon/early evening. “The problem is that this will be during the evening commute, potentially causing some hazardousconditions on the roads.” Cold temperatures will remain in place behind the Friday night cold front. “Temps will likely struggle to get much above freezing on Saturday,” the NWS stated. “Westerly winds of 15 to 20 mph will occasionally gust to near 30 leading to ‘feel-like’ temps only in the teens to low 20s on Saturday and then dropping close to single digits Saturday night.” As for the storm coming Sunday night into Monday, it predicted to bring 2-4 inches of snow, but it is still early for an accurate prediction. “There is still too much variability in the model guidance to paint a picture of exactly where the highest impacts of the winter storm will end up impacting, however confidence is fairly high in at least someaccumulating snowfall for the region.”
