TOPEKA (KSNT) - Team Kitten, a Topeka non-profit, is sharing some tips to give shelter to outdoor cats Friday as wintery conditions are forecasted for the approaching weekend. Team Kitten said it hears stories about cats losing tails or ears to frostbite every year and shared some helpful information to help outdoor cats stay warm. Team Kitten recommends people do the following to help stray and outside cats survive the coming winter weather: Fill a cooler, plastic tote or cardboard box with straw. You can also add Styrofoam, reflective blankets or hand warmers inside. Place animal-safe heating pads in a covered area of your porch. Team Kitten instructs people to keep the blankets dry and not to put straw on them. Crack a door to give cats a place to stay dry and avoid the wind. Feed the cats so they can get the extra needed calories. You can buy a heated water dish or replace water dishes as they ice over. Consider bringing your pets inside while temperatures get dangerous. Kansas tax collections exceed estimates Team Kitten started in November 2023 and helps fight the overpopulation of cats in the Topeka area and surrounding counties. Volunteers with Team Kitten also work closely with the Topeka Cat Café which opened in July 2024 to help speed up adoptions in the community. Team Kitten primarily works to help kittens and rehabilitate them, partnering with multiple local foster homes to help accomplish their mission. The organization’s founders are a group of women who want to improve the quality of life for cats in the community and keep the overall population in check. You can find the Topeka Cat Café at 400 Southwest 29th Street. Learn more about Team Kitten’s work in the community and the services it offers by clicking here. For more local news, click here.
