SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) — Saturday will begin a six-day funeral schedule to honor the legacy of the 39th president. Jimmy Carter was a peanut farmer, a Sunday school teacher, a Georgian and the longest-living president. He died at the age of 100 and leaves behind a life dedicated to decades of service. Throughout the next week, his funeral will make many stops. The funeral will begin Saturday morning in Americus, Georgia, with a motorcade to ride through his hometown of Plains, Georgia. This will also include a pause at the family farm where Carter grew up. Following that, the motorcade will travel to Georgia’s State Capitol in Atlanta, where Gov. Brian Kemp and other officials will be. There will be moments of silence and public viewings in Atlanta from Saturday evening to Tuesday morning at the Carter Presidential Center. Carter’s body will then travel to Washington D.C. where he will lie at the U.S. Capitol, followed by a national funeral service at the Washington National Cathedral on Thursday. President Joe Biden will deliver a eulogy at Carter’s funeral service. Afterward, Carter's body will return to Plains for a private service and burial, but the public is invited to line the motorcade route for his final journey. "He was a real underdog campaigning when you study the presidency, he came from really a long, long way, from nowhere. He had no national contacts, what he was able to accomplish in 1976, if I were running for office, I would study it and figure out exactly what he was able to do," said Stan Deaton, who works for the Georgia Historical Society. If you are in or traveling to the Atlanta area, the viewing will be held at the Carter Center from Saturday at 7 p.m. through Tuesday through 6 a.m. In Washington D.C., on Tuesday, mourners can pay their respects from 7 p.m. to midnight at the U.S. Capitol and from 7 a.m. on Wednesday to 7 a.m. on Thursday. Carter’s private funeral will be held where he taught Sunday school classes for decades.Jimmy Carter’s funeral schedule:Jan 4-7: Public viewing in AtlantaJan 7-8: Lying in state at U.S. CapitolJan 9: National funeral service at Washington National CathedralFinal resting place: Plains, Georgia - public invited to line the motorcade route The Carter Center suggests that instead of sending flowers, people could donate to the Carter Center, which the former president established in the 1980s after he left office.
