The weather is definitely going to change over the next few days. We had a nice stretch of warm weather over the last few days. High Temps Last 2 Weeks However, yesterday colder air pushed back into the region. High temps were only in the upper 40s. If you think that's cold, well then just wait until this weekend. Today won't be too bad though. High temps will rise to near 50 degrees. Forecast Temps Today However, we will have increasing clouds through the day. This will be due to high pressure sliding offshore and moisture increasing from the southwest. Regional Weather Map Winds will increase today ahead of a system off to the west. Winds will gust up to 20mph through the afternoon. That's why I think we'll be able to reach up to 50, but most of the day we'll be in the 40s. There may be some isolated rain showers this afternoon, but there won't be much. As we get into the evening the front and the low will be swiping through the region. Temps will be above freezing at the surface, but cold air aloft might create a scattered mix for a time. Future Trak This Evening This will be in the form of scattered rain showers with a few sleet pellets and wet snowflakes. Anything that falls should melt. Shortly after the front slides through the winds will rev up out of the northwest. For a time winds will gust to around 35mph. Wind Gusts This Evening This will quickly drive down the temps. Skies will clear overnight as temps drop down into the upper 20s. Wind chills will be in the teens and 20s early tomorrow morning. Forecast Wind Chills Saturday Morning Winds may gust to over 40mph for a brief time early tomorrow morning near the shore. We'll be dry all day Saturday with lots of sunshine. However, high temps will only be in the upper 30s. Forecast Temps Tomorrow Wind chills will be in the 20s in the afternoon. We'll stay dry late Saturday into Sunday morning. Then during the day clouds will increase. High temps will make it to the low 40s Sunday afternoon. There shouldn't be any precip through that time. However, by Sunday evening things get interesting. A bigger/stronger area of low pressure will form to our west during the day Sunday. It won't get here by Sunday evening, but some overunning precip may form by the early evening hours. Future Trak Sunday Evening The precip may not reach the ground at first. We call that virga. Eventually, though, the deeper moisture will arrive from the south. So some mixed precip or even brief light snow could fall for a time. However, milder temperature will push up from the south as well. This should act to change the precip over to cold rain Sunday night into Monday morning. GFS Monday Morning The low will still be to our west by Monday morning. This will allow our local winds to increase out of the south at all levels. Moisture and temps should increase through the day. As temps rise into the 40s we should have a lot of rain over the region. GFS Monday Afternoon I will say that this morning's run of the European model doesn't have the warm air getting as far north as the GFS and NAM models. So it keeps a mix north of the metro for a while. European Model Monday Afternoon As of this time it looks like high temps are aiming for the mid 40s, but that could change. It will be a chilly rain for sure. By the evening the area of low pressure should start to move offshore. Colder air will wrap in behind it. Moisture will also wrap in behind it. This could allow for the rain to change back into a wintry mix and possibly even some snow for a time. GFS Modal Late Monday Night Since the European model is colder it has more snow than mix during that time. European Model Monday Evening This part of the forecast has a lot more uncertainty than other parts. I've mentioned that we don't typically get too much precip on the back side of departing lows. That is unless they are very slow-moving or parked offshore. That's not the case this time. It should move at a good clip. Either way we should then dry out going into Tuesday. High temps will probably only be in the upper 30s. For snow totals I will say that there won't be anything this evening. The forecast for late Sunday through late Monday is very uncertain. I will show you the latest GFS and Euro model forecasts. GFS Snow Forecast European Model Snow Forecast Keep in mind that the Euro just flipped from yesterday. It does currently have a colder/snowier scenario, but it is not favored. The NAM model only goes out so far. At the tail end, so far, it looks like it will have the warmer/wetter scenario as well. In fact it doesn't have any precip starting until late Sunday night. All of these details are (LIKELY TO CHANGE), but the trend shows at least some higher accumulations north/northwest of the metro. It could be enough to stall travel up that way. Especially up towards the D.C. area. So please check back over the weekend for updates on this thing. One big issue is that all the kids head back to school on Monday, and many will head back to work as well. So the nasty weather could be problematic for that. Meteorologist: Jeremy Wheeler
