FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – With more snow on the way, it's important to have a plan in place for next week's inclement weather conditions. Even in the snow, people have got to get to work, run errands and get around. But a quick trip can turn into an hour or two on the road, getting your car unstuck from the snow. If you remember CATS, you might be able to continue your journey in minutes. C: Clear a path for all your tires.A: Add some traction to the front and back of the tires. Cat litter or sand works.T: Check the tires to make sure they're all good.S: Get back in the car, straighten your wheels, and rock back and forth until you're unstuck.Triple A Auto Group said you should only get out of your car if it is safe. Remain in your car if you are stranded on a busy road or highway. You could get hit by a sliding car. Just in case you cannot get your car out of the snow, you may want to prepare a winter car survival kit. Triple A suggested drivers should have a few necessities on top of the winter supplies like shovels and sand. These include cell phone chargers, food like jerky and granola, water, a blanket, gloves and hats. They can be stored anywhere in the vehicle like the trunk or back seat; just make sure the equipment is secure. Beyond roads, slippery sidewalks are also a hazard for everyone, but especially the elderly. Experts say seniors are more likely to experience bone fractures as the result of a fall. These breaks may have serious consequences. "An elderly person is way more susceptible to a fracture," said Joey Wallace, a biomedical professor at Purdue University in Indianapolis. "The bigger problem is what happens after the fracture and that mortality risk for an elderly person is markedly higher for a younger individual." Wallace suggested younger family members should offer help to the elderly in their lives to avoid having them travel in the icy outdoors. AAA said its call volume is currently high. It encourages motorists who are in need of assistance to reach it via its Roadside Assistance Hotline or on its Mobile App or by texting ‘help’ to 800-222-6424. AAA assistance is available for anyone, but there is a fee for non-members.
