Discussion:
A strong cold front will move through the region today bringing gusty winds with gusts up to 50 mph and 1-3 inches of snow for the mountains. A winter weather and wind advisory will be in effect through Saturday across the high country. Temperatures for the rest of the region will peak in the low 50s, ahead of the front with gusty northwest winds bringing a steep drop in temperatures tonight. Saturday will be frigid with wind chills 5-10 below zero for the mountains and falling into the teens for the Piedmont. Daytime highs will struggle to break out of the 30s and low 40s throughout the region. Sunday night into Monday a strong low pressure system will bring a wintry mix of snow and ice for the mountains and foothills with up to .1-.2″ of ice accumulation possible. This will cause major travel issues as well as potential power outages. Warmer air nudging into the Piedmont will keep this a straight rain event for areas south of I-85. An even colder blast of arctic air arrives midweek sending temperatures tumbling with highs not getting out of the 30s and lows in the teens and 20s.
