CHARLESTON COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) - Charleston County School District's three newly elected board members will serve a community meal on Friday to raise awareness of student homelessness. Kevin Hollinshead, Carolina Jewett, and Michele Leber along with other community leaders will prepare and serve a hot meal to community members from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 3990 Rivers Ave in North Charleston. The school district said Superintendent Anita Huggins demonstrated support by making a donation of food for the meal. Carolina Jewett represents Mount Pleasant District 2, Michele Leber represents West Ashley District 6, and Kevin Hollinshead represents North Charleston District 4. According to CCSD, Hollinshead planned this event to call attention to the 400 students deemed homeless in the Charleston County School District. Hollinshead said, "Homelessness in the school system affects the achievement gap. Teachers can't effectively teach a student who is worried about their family and where they are going to sleep that night"
