SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — The onset of January is often marked by a decline in in-store visits, online activity and overall sales for retailers. However, there are steps small businesses can take to beat the post-holiday sales slump.  According to the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce, San Diego is made up of 95% small businesses. Currently, some sale signs are up inside Pigment in Point Loma. "We’ve got our 50% off our holiday decor right now so that’s also bringing a lot of people in so we’re seeing people you know they’re out there shopping," said assistant manager Cammie Scott.  Now that the holidays have come and gone the shop is adjusting to a change in foot traffic.  "We’re finding it's the same thing that we had a lot of last year. So, things aren’t as intensely crazy as they were during the holiday, but we’re still seeing people shopping," Scott said. It’s a common trend for the retail industry this time of year. "Our membership is made up of about 70% of small businesses, so we don’t necessarily have that data for the trend, but we hear anecdotally from our members that there is a slight slump in January,” said Justine Murray, Executive Director of Public Affairs for the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce. According to Murray, local residents can make a big difference with small purchases, such as a card.  "Additionally, we hear also from our small businesses word of mouth is extremely important, so if you can’t monetarily contribute to those businesses in January, it's leaving a positive review online on Yelp,” Murray said. Other strategies can also attract customers when things slow down. "We have a rewards system which is very nice. It doesn’t cost anything," Cammie Scott explained. The San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce offers local businesses resources, including workshops on media training from both the private and public sector that can help provide a boost especially during any slower months. More information on those resources can be found here.
