Northern California deputies shoot, kill man in alleged New Year’s Day confrontation

(FOX40.COM) — On the evening of New Year's Day, deputies in Shasta County shot and killed a man who allegedly confronted the two officials.
According to the Shasta County Sheriff's Office, deputies responded to a call of a man under the influence of narcotics at a residence in a rural area north of Redding, about 180 miles north of Sacramento, after 6 p.m.

The emergency call reportedly informed that the man was with his elderly parents and that he was threatening to blow up a vehicle and was allegedly trying to harm himself, the sheriff's office said.
When deputies arrived, they spoke with the man's parents outside of the residence.
Soon after, the man exited. He was identified by the sheriff's office as William Clark Littlefield, 52.

The agency said that Littlefield "forced a violent confrontation" and that two deputies were "forced...to discharge their weapons."
Deputies provided medical aid, but Littlefield died soon after being attended by medical staff. The deputies were not injured.
The sheriff's office said that the deputies involved in the shooting were put on paid administrative leave and that the Officer Involved Critical Incident Response Team was investigating the shooting.
