FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) - Celebratory gunfire on New Year's Eve can be dangerous - as anything going up must come down. Fresno Fire Captain John Pepper's truck is proof that falling bullets can do real damage. Captain Pepper says he working his shift on New Year's Eve; at around midnight, he could hear the celebrations begin. How fast can a bullet fall? Fast enough to kill, Fresno Police say "I looked out my window and see a ton of fireworks in the sky. I was thinking 'everybody's having a good night'," Pepper said. "Shortly before midnight started, I started hearing something that sounds a little different than fireworks." Pepper says he heard nearly 30 to 40 gunshots going off throughout the night. Come the morning of New Year's Day, Pepper says he stepped into the parking lot and found a bullet hole in the hood of his car. "I kind of laughed," Pepper said. "This is pretty crazy that someone shot into the air, and it happened to find my vehicle when the bullet came back down." But Pepper says, that once the randomness of the incident wore off, he and his family of coworkers weren't laughing anymore. "We all also thought how lucky that that bullet didn't come down and actually hit somebody and just hit my truck," Pepper said. "Those things can be repaired and replaced. Family members, friends, and coworkers cannot." Pepper says that anyone skeptical that a bullet shot into the air can hurt someone should now just take a look at the hood of his car. The National Library of Medicine (NLM) says a bullet falling from the sky has the potential to reach a terminal velocity of up to 600 feet per second (about 409 miles per hour), over three times the force needed to kill.
