An investigation is underway after a deadly fire tore through an apartment complex on Lower Ferry Road in Ewing Thursday afternoon.
Ewing Police said that calls came in around 3 p.m. Thursday reporting heavy smoke and flames in the front of Cambridge Hall, an apartment complex on the 800 block of Lower Ferry Rd.
Officers were the first to arrive on the scene and were told that a child was trapped on the fourth floor. They immediately began assisting in an evacuation of the building.
All three Ewing fire departments were dispatched and were able to reach the fourth-floor apartment where officials say the fire began.
Firefighters found an unresponsive six-year-old and were able to get him transported to Capital Health Regional Medical Center where he succumbed to his injuries a short time later.
Fire departments from Trenton, Lawrence, Pennington, and Hopewell helped get the fire under control. Capital Health Medics with EMS from Ewing, Trenton, Lawrence, and Hopewell treated and transported victims.
In addition to the fatality, more than a dozen were transported to local hospitals for injuries “ranging from minor burns to smoke inhalation and exhaustion.” Ewing police said a total of 13 police officers, one firefighter, and three residents were sent for treatment.
The fire was reported to be under control around 4:40 p.m. and is being investigated by Ewing Police, Ewing Fire, and the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office, though Ewing Police said, “the fire is not thought to be suspicious at this time.”
Anyone with information that could help the investigation is asked to call Ewing Police Det. David Hartmann at 609-882-1313 ext. 7544.
