Warmer before wintry weather moves into New Mexico
Jan 02, 2025
Much warmer weather has returned to New Mexico today. This will stick around through Saturday as cooler air will move in starting Sunday and a chance for wintry weather next week.
Parts of eastern New Mexico were as much as 30° warmer Thursday afternoon compared to Wednesday. Highs climbed into the 60s across most of New Mexico, with 50s in the northern part of the state, and a few 70s in southeast New Mexico. This stretch of warmer weather will continue into Friday, despite another cold morning. High temperatures by the afternoon could even break a few records in central and western New Mexico.
A storm system will scrape New Mexico Saturday, bringing strong winds Saturday afternoon. West/northwesterly winds will gust as high as 35 to 55 mph. This will also bring a high fire danger across the state. Temperatures will still be warm to mild Saturday afternoon, but a cold front will be sweeping through the state, bringing cooler air by Sunday. Winds will be breezy again Sunday afternoon, but not as strong as Saturday.
Temperatures will continue to trend cooler early next week. A strong east canyon wind will develop Tuesday in the Albuquerque Metro. Light snow is looking more and more likely Tuesday, especially in northern and eastern New Mexico. There is some disagreement on whether we will see more widespread snowfall or weather the snow will stay in the eastern and northern parts of the state. Snowfall totals will be light regardless, but temperatures will be much cooler.
