RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- The Richmond City Council has elected its members who will serve as its president and vice president during a meeting held on Thursday where the nine newly elected members were also sworn in. Following the administration of oaths for nine newly elected members of Richmond City Council on Thursday, Jan. 2, the council elected Councilmember Cynthia Newbille to serve as council president and Councilmember Katherine Jordan to serve as vice president. The council elects the president and vice president from amongst its members, with Newbille representing Richmond's East End 7th Voter District and Jordan representing the city's North Central 2nd Voter District. They will serve two-year terms in these roles. According to a spokesperson for the city, the new council includes five newly re-elected members, one previously appointed newly elected member and three new first-time members. After winning the November election, the three new first-time members sworn in at the Thursday meeting were 1st District Councilman Andrew Breton, 3rd District Councilwoman Kenya Gibson and 4th District Councilwoman Sarah Abubaker. Individual members of the Richmond City Council are elected to serve four-year terms, according to the spokesperson. The current 2025-2028 Richmond City Council term will run from Jan. 2, 2025 to Dec. 31, 2028.
